What is Urge Incontinence?

Urge incontinence, also known as overactive bladder, is when a person feels a strong urge to urinate even when their bladder isn't full. Oftentimes, a person may not reach a restroom in time and may experience dribbles or accidental leaks. An overactive bladder can interfere with work and a social life due to the need to keep running to the bathroom.

Urge Incontinence Symptoms

The most common symptom of urge incontinence is an urgent, “gotta go to the bathroom” feeling. Most people with an overactive bladder may frequent the bathroom more often than the average person. Other symptoms may include nocturia, which is the need to frequently urinate during the night. If you are experiencing any symptoms of urge incontinence, it’s important to talk with a healthcare professional to receive a proper diagnosis. Keeping a bladder diary can help you better describe your symptoms to your doctor.

What Causes Urge Incontinence?

A variety of factors may cause urge incontinence including aging, bladder infections, taking certain medications, nerve damage, or neurological disorders. Other causes such as bladder stones, prostate enlargement, obstruction in the bladder opening, bladder cancer, or a nervous system disorder may also result in an overactive bladder.

Diagnosis of Urge Incontinence

In order to diagnose an overactive bladder, a physical exam will need to be performed by your doctor. Your doctor will review your medical history as well as other symptoms you are experiencing. Other tests may be ordered including:

  • Urinalysis test to check for abnormalities in urine and/or infections,
  • Urodynamic testing to check how well the bladder and urethra are functioning, or
  • Cystoscopy to look for blockages or any abnormalities in the bladder and urethra.

Urge Incontinence Treatment

Several types of treatment are available for urge incontinence. A natural way to strengthen pelvic floor muscles is doing kegel exercises. Other treatment options include lifestyle changes, medications, and nonsurgical treatments such as neuromodulation. In more severe cases, surgery will be required to correct a prolapsed bladder or enlarged prostate.
