Tips on How To Make a Face Mask With Fabric

coronavirus COVID-19 DIY face mask homemade masks non-woven surgical masks

As more and more positive cases of the novel coronavirus appear in the United States, it is important that our communities continue to maintain proper hygiene and follow precautions set forth by health professionals and government officials. Last week, the mayors of Los Angeles and New York City announced a recommendation for individuals to wear homemade masks, scarves, or fabric to cover their mouth and nose when leaving the house. While face masks made out of fabric are not as effective as N95 masks, having an extra layer of protection over your face while out in public can still help minimize the risk of exposure.

There are a a lot of written and video tutorials that show how to make a mask with fabric with free printable mask patterns available online.

Here are some tips for making a budget friendly face mask out of fabric at home with stuff you already might have around:

  • Use cotton fabric for the outer layer of your face mask since it is a tightly woven material (If you do not want to go to the store, you can simply use an old cotton pillow case or other unwanted cotton fabric)
  • Place a filter inside the mask using a non-woven material (Non-woven tote bags and non-woven bed underpads can be used)
  • Use an elastic hair tie or rubber band for the earloop (Make sure to fit the mask properly before sewing to avoid discomfort)
  • Use clothespins or hair clips to keep the fabric in place (Easy alternative to silk pins for those who do not sew often)

We hope you are doing well emotionally and physically during this time. We are all in this together!
